Interior Designers: LEDs change the game

19/05/2014

LED lights - the shiny new toy of interior designers

LED lights have the potential to change interior design – smaller than ever they give interior architects the possibility to concentrate on design and forget about the ugliness and clumsiness of traditional light fixtures. Furthermore, the fact that there are various predesigned LED light fixtures on the market makes LED lighting available to non-professionals and their home improvement projects as well.

When designing our home or working on professional interior design projects we focus on functionality, flexibility, usability, complete effect, etc. We want to achieve results and not sweat about how to fit in solutions to make them work.

This is the reason why LED lights are seen as the future of both simple home solutions and intricate designer projects – because LED lights are small, flexible, easy to fit and deliver great results in terms of lighting effect, color, dimming abilities and intelligent control.

However, the advantages of using LED lights in interior design do not end there. Besides the fact that LED lights use considerably smaller amounts of energy to function due to high efficiency, they are also the health conscious choice among energy saving light bulbs as they contain no mercury and emit almost no light in the infrared spectrum.

The small size of LEDs allows designers to play with light in ways unimaginable before. Now it is possible to achieve dramatic lighting effects and make homes and office spaces more pleasant places to be. One does not have to think about for example placing LED bulbs a certain distance away from sensitive objects as LEDs produce “cold light”. This feature of LEDs becomes especially important when designing the interior of a museum or a gallery where the environment has to be strictly controlled.

Design is everywhere

When talking about LED lights in interior design it is not only about lighting a room. Design is everywhere – even in the smallest details. For example the old-school banker's lamp which typically is a rather hulking presence might be a necessity if designing an office. By replacing the standard bulb with a slender strip of warm white LEDs, Ron Gilad created a sleeker version, his Goldman lamp for Flos. The new minimalist version of the lamp can today proudly be displayed in a modern office without ruining the style.

This kind of minimalist thinking can create more harmonic spaces as well as more intelligent ones when LEDs are used as intelligent lighting.

LEDs in the kitchen

Unlike traditional light bulbs, the surface of LEDs remains cold when switched on. This means that you can fit them into tight spaces without heating up the surrounding surfaces. Kitchen designers for instance have started mounting LED lights under upper cabinets to illuminate the counter without slow-roasting any food kept inside.

Architects have also begun to mount LED lights directly into floors and carpets to create various lighting effects.  While incandescent lamps can discolor surrounding materials, like drywall and wallpaper with LEDs this is no longer a problem.

Rainbow White

Perhaps the most powerful new feature LEDs offer to designers is the ability to adjust the color temperature of light. A controllable feature known as "dynamic white" offers almost as many color variations from yellow to natural bright day light as one can imagine.

Dynamic LED light fixtures contain arrangements of LEDs with different temperature of light and achieve their effects by delivering different blends of the LED bulbs’ light.

Today this feature is primarily available to interior designers but as with everything with LED lights, this option is now becoming available to mainstream consumers. In practice the high availability of ready-to-use variations and design features of LED lights on the market makes LEDs a preferred choice also for non-professionals.

The professional light for you

LEDs are basically light producing semiconductors. This means that it's very easy to integrate "smart" features directly into LED bulbs. With LEDs we are moving from electrics to electronics. Lamps will eventually be able to interact with their surroundings in ways that we never imagined before.

The technological potential of LEDs is only beginning to be realized. The good news is that development in the area is very dynamic and we see new features and uses of LED lights every day. The even better news is that most of those features are made available to mainstream consumers shortly after their development.

Therefore the only thing one ever has to worry about is to be creative enough to get the most out of the incredible LED bulb.
